Brain Injuries
There is nothing harder for a family
than watching a loved disabled through injury. The
most common of these catastrophic injuries are brain
injuries through auto-accidents and slip and falls.
When a sudden trauma causes this type of brain damage,
it is refered to as a Traumatic Brain Injury, or
TBI. At the The Law
Offices of Robert J. Weber, P.C., we understand
these types of injuries and know the experts who
can document them.
Each year in the United States:
- approximately 1 million head-injured people
are treated in hospital emergency rooms,
- approximately 270,000 people experience a
moderate or severe TBI,
- approximately 60,000 new cases of epilepsy
occur as a result of head trauma,
- approximately 230,000 people are hospitalized
for TBI and survive,
- approximately 80,000 of these survivors live
with significant disabilities as a result of
the injury, and
- approximately 70,000 people die from head
injury.
Like any injury, TBIs can exist to different
degrees. With a mild TBI, a person may temporarily
lose consciousness and feel “dazed”
for up to a couple weeks after the injury. Other
symptoms may include:
- Headache
- mental confusion
- lightheadedness
- dizziness
- double vision, blurred vision, or tired
eyes,
- ringing in the ears,
- bad taste in the mouth,
- fatigue or lethargy,
- a change in sleep patterns,
- behavioral or mood changes, and
- trouble with memory, concentration, attention,
or thinking
- symptoms remain the same or get better;
worsening symptoms indicate a more severe injury.
With moderate to severe TBI, the
victim may show similar symptoms, but may also include:
- Loss of consciousness
- Change in personality
- Severe, persistent headache
- Frequent vomiting or nausea
- Seizures
- Comatose
- Dilation (widening) of one or both pupils
- Slurred speech
- Weakness or numbness in the extremities
- Lack of coordination
- Confusion or agitation
- Destruction of memory
Small children with moderate to severe TBI may possess
age specific symptoms including:
- persistent crying,
- inability to be consoled, and/or
- refusal to nurse or eat.
TBI disabilities can be very expensive and last
a lifetime. You deserve damages for costly medical
bills, caregivers, lost wages, and the pain and
suffering resulting from the injury.
