Joan M. Lebow, J.D.
Ms. Lebow is a healthcare attorney with 24 years of corporate and
regulatory experience.
Ms. Lebow provides corporate counsel services for a variety of
companies and health care provider practices. Ms. Lebow concentrates
on healthcare issues in the context of clinical services delivery
and commercial transactions, corporate organization for clinical
providers, health benefits, ERISA, managed care and regulatory compliance
and provides direct client support on HIPPA and state laws on privacy
and security.
Ms. Lebow serves as General Counsel of IBEX Healthdata Systems,
Inc. The company provides web-based applications to hospitals and
physicians which track patients and staff, documents care and supports
clinical interaction to reduce error and augment clinical decision
making. Ms. Lebow manages and provides all legal services, including
intellectual property, trademark, software licensing and sublicensing
legal services. She manages employment issues, serves as Corporate
Secretary, and is a member of the senior management team.
Ms. Lebow started the Legal Department of Illinois Masonic Medical
Center, Chicago, in 1987 and was General Counsel for 13 years. During
her tenure, she managed all trials and appeals, all insurance, including
commercial, malpractice liability, and self-insurance. In addition,
she provided legal and management expertise in support of insurance
susidiaries consisting of a Health Maintenance Organization, a Medicare
Select product, two Preferred Provider Organizations and a Preferred
Provider Administrator. Ms. Lebow was among the first in the industry
to seek mediated resolution of high exposure litigation. Ms. Lebow
managed the regulatory compliance of the Medical Center, in the
areas of government reimbursement and clinical operations. Ms. Lebow
served as Assistant General Counsel of Northwestern Memorial Hospital
where she engaged in a broad healthcare and corporate practice.
She represented Northwestern in state and federal administrative
hearings, handled ERISA and employee benefit issues, medical staff
and licensed professional regulatory affairs. She began her career
in Law as an associate with the firms of Lord, Bissell & Brook
and Sweeney & Riman, Ltd. Ms. Lebow handled direct litigation,
insurance coverage disputes and corporate matters.
She is a frequent presenter on topics such as the advent of the
federal Digital Signature Statute, attorney-client privilege and
ethical issues for corporate counsel and insurance regulation. She
is a past President and current Board Member of the Chicago Chapter
of the American Corporate Counsel Association. She has served on
the Board of Directors of The Family Institute, is an active fundraiser
for The Bottomless Closet, is a member of the Steering Committee
of the Senior Business Women's Forum and serves on various committees
of the Illinois Association of Hospital Attorneys.
Ms. Lebow received her Bachelors Degree in Religious Philosophy
from Pitzer College, The Claremont Colleges, Claremont California,
in 1975 and received her J.D. from the Illinois Institute of Technology
Chicago-Kent College of Law, Chicago, Illinois, in 1978. In her
senior year she served as an intern for the Honorable Abraham Lincoln
Marovitz, United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois.
